ITG is doing baseball now

I’m finally moved and sort of set up in my new place. There’s still tons of work to do but at least, my office is up and running and I can take the hobby back with the upcoming Footballs and more Baseball coming up.

Of course the big news is the Baltimore-Con but other than that, I was reading some news and found out that ITG is taking a stab at baseball now. That is great, sort of.

ITG is doing a great job with hockey even without any NHLPA license. I don’t know what kind of window they will be able to get for Baseball but I truly believe it is a good thing because ITG loves and knows how to produce great looking cards.

The resale value is pretty off on these but for collecting purposes, Panini should take a good look at these guys and take several notes.

The baseball preview mention an ‘all-hit’ product but really, I’m looking forwards a huge ‘’Heroes & Prospects’’ like they do with hockey and it shall be really fun to put together.

What do you guys think about that? ITG, yay or nay?

Vintage Hockey

I was bored last week and went through the random lots on Ebay and found something cheap, but really nice.

I picked-up a sweet lot of 1978-79 Topps Hockey. Value wise, they're pretty beat up but for 4$, I think it was a fairly good deal and the cards look great, even though the condition is not so great.

Anytime you can pick cards older than you for less that 30 cents a piece, you gotta do it. Here's the results, all for my PC.

Yvan Cournoyer is an Habs legend. Him alone was worth the lot. Got a sweet Guy Lafleur Scoring Leader as well.

Stan Mikita, you know the guy I'm pretty sure. Lanny Mcdonald is no schmo either.

No real stars here but Bernie Wolfe looks cool.

Another weak page, look at the beards. Sweet collection.

Anyway, I might go for the set, evantually, but I think I'm gonna focus more on Vintage since the new products bum me out most of the time (I'm looking at you Panini)

A&G Group Break

Maildays are always fun days.

I was a part of the Allen & Ginter group break on Carl Crawford's Blog and I had the Nationals and Twins. No, I did not pulled any Strasburgh and yes, I do not care all that much since I'm an Expos fan and don't really care for the Nationals but I'm still picking them in breaks in case there is some retro thing.

So, long story short I got my cards today and beside a ton of bases (If you need any of those 2 teams in base cards, I have them in quadruple for sure) here are the main hits in my package.

Jason Kubel is a decent slugger and the Silk Cards looks really, really good. Plus the low numbering makes it a great hit. It's probably going on Ebay since the Silk Cards are hot right now and I don't really care all that much about Kubel (I'm more into Morneau since we share a last name). But still, pretty decent break.

Brian Duensing is no Cy Young but it's a crisp looking auto. I don't like the fact that the card moves inside of it's frame but still, it's going with the tradebaits as a sweet auto.

And some Minis. Seriously, how do you store those? They are so tiny and my hands so large, it's not a perfect match, oh god no. They're sleeping in a box right now until I find better use for them.

All in all, I'm not a huge A&G fan. Too many random cards, too many sizes and too many 'facts of the world' that I don't really care about.

But, the base cards that are sports related look really good. So I'm torned.

Fun product, no doubt, but not a keeper for me.

Anyway, keep an eye on the blog, they do a great job with the Monthly Break.

Set building and other ramblings

My girlfriend and I are moving with the baby girl in a new bigger place, that explains why I didn't had much time to be around here. So I have to pack the collection for the new place and I'm kind of depressed. Why? Because I don't have as much as I use to to look at these old binders containing full base sets.

I mean, when I was 6 or 7, I spent hours sorting and resorting my cards in those binders. Page by page, I was a sorting machine and most of my collecting was about looking at these cards afterwards. Now? Everything is dusty and some of my binders were so far behind a pile than I don't even remember what is in them and frankly, I don't really care to know.

Should I rethink my hobby? Retool it maybe? Or maybe I am just a bit jaded about everything and I don't put as much value as I use to in my cards.

I'm a bit lost here but, on the other hand, I'm going for a master set of Bowman 2010. Go figure...

My guess is that I am jaded and I like shiny new things.That's quite sad...

Keep on the hobby people, I'll seek my shiny new things as soon as I am moved, or maybe before.

Damnit, I sound like a smoker who is trying to quit for the eight time this year. I swear, this time I mean it.

Limited budget need wax...

Ok, this summer is no fun (hobby wise).

I'm a little short on cash with all my new expenses and I need to bust some wax but here are my problems :

1) I hate retail
2) They are no hobby shop around my house
3) Everything online is the same, all the time.

What should I buy?

A Bowman Problem

Being home on a month 'vacation' to take care of my girlfriend and my little baby girl gives me a lot of time to kill, especially during the night time where I usually sleep and now I have to put the baby back to sleep. With my new temporary schedule, I've don some cards sorting to kill the time. My project this week was to sort out all the 2010 Bowman I've bought and see if it was worth the shot of doing a full set of these.

And I'm torn

I'm halfway there with the Chromes (missing Strasburgh), halfway there with the regular First Cards (still miss Stras) and almost 3 quarters there for the base set (missing Haywayd and Stras). With one Jumbo Box or 2 hobby I'd probably cover the base and advance the Chrome enough for chasing the rest pieces by pieces. Only problem is ...

Have you soon the prices on the boxes?

For the love of God, I paid around 100$ a box a month ago and sell some packs out of theses boxes, I should have kept everything a while and resell, these prices are crazy high and makes it inconceivable to pursue the set. But I wanted to. What should I do? Turn to last year's products? Wait a long while for prices to drop? By a bulk of singles of Fee-Bays?

I'm really torned/pissed to have done all this sorting with no apparent results. What would you do with that Bowman problem?

Prospecting Basketball... Who to buy?

Tonight is the NBA Draft and a week from today, it's the Free Agent frenzy known as The Summer of Lebron. After the NBA Finals, it's a great time to prospect since the hobby is focusing on the champions and challengers and tend to forget the rebuilding teams and the moving pieces of the summer.

Me, here's where I'll place my money for this summer. A quick list of players to buy now before they become bigger assets in the hobby. In no particular order...

CHRIS BOSH - Toronto Raptors

Bosh is burried in Toronto and the hobby didn't notice how good he is. This time is soon to be over as Bosh will land in a bigger market and will shine for a playoff team.

His autos and rookies all goes for cheap (less than 30$) even the low numbered one.

RUDY GAY - Memphis Grizzlies

Gay is at a cross-road right now and he'll either resign in Memphis or land elsewhere to be someone's sidekick. But what a Sidekick. If Gay lands in New-York or LA (Clippers), his exposure will be through the roof and he's a very athletic and skillfull young man.

Gay's auto are very very cheap and everything else goes for less than 5$. It's almost unfair to him to be so cheap within the hobby.

GEORGE HILL - San Antonio Spurs

Tony Parker's days in San Antonio are counted. He will be gone, maybe not this summer but by the end of the year he will be traded for somme assets and make room for George Hill to be the Spurs starter. It's obvious by now that Hill is ready to lead this team and it's only a matter of time.

His SPA Rookie Auto Patch can be add for less than 20$ regularly and it's a steal for a future starter of an every year contender.

MARREESE SPEIGHTS - Philadelphia 76ers

The Sixers are in a tough place with Elton Brand's contract and the overall lack of depth on their roster. But they hold the second pick this year (likely Evan Turner) and will evantually admit the Brand's mistake and start Speight in his place.

The Sixers are on the turn around and are always a popular team and evantually, Speights will blossom into an everyday contributor and maybe a quality starter.

Rookie Autos are super cheap and worth the gamble.

BROOK LOPEZ - New Jersey Nets

Lopez is the more expansive of the five but he is a sure thing with the Nets. What ever happens in Jersey, Lopez will be a vital part of it and he will grow as one of the best center in the East (second best to Dwight Howard anytime soon).

Lopez is a beast and still a bit pricy but the value will only rise with him. Guaranteed.

The Draft is tonight, free agency is July first. Check it out... let the fun begin.

Group Break - Hockey

I just received my cards from the Monthly break over at Joe Collector and it's always fun to receive new cards at home.

It was a team based break and I had my Habs and the Rangers (random choices). The break was for 4 boxes of UD Champs, 1 OPC Premier and some loose packs of UD Series 2. I did very well just because I had my Habs but then again, I'm not a huge fan of the Champs serie, except for the base cards cards that simply looks awesome. Take a look.

Yes, that is 3 Patrick Roy just for me. My favorite player of all time growing up an still one of my all-time greats, I can't be mad about duplicates of this guy, never. I have piles of junk commons of Patrick Roy and I still want more. MORE !

Other than the bases (pulled some nice Gretskys and Messier as well) here's an overview of my share of the hits.

It's our former captain with a serial number. Not bad but I never really was into Saku. The guy is soft even tough he recovered from Cancer. Go figure...

Great on card auto of Artem Anisimov but I don't like the ''Minis'' card, I just don't know what to do with it. Don't know how to store them and I don't really want to start buying special stuff for these. They remind me of the oversized sets in the 90's that had specially design 6 cards pages for binders. Those were weird and so are these ones. But still, on card autos, my favorite thing about the hobby.

HABS legend with a piece of Jersey. Still a mini card but hey, that was the break so I'm not complaining. Steve Shutt is, after all, a great player.

A trio of Mini Cards. I had more (Like Scotty Bowman and some rookies) but those are my three favorites. Of crouse there is Patrick Roy (again) and then these weird oddities. A dinosaur cards and Sir John Thompson. I don't know if I'm keeping these but for the time being, they look cool on my desk. We will see.

These breaks are always a good time and you should check out Joe's place for more of these. It's a monthly thing and the guy is an ace with the pricing and the shipping. Great collector, trustwhorthy and hobby fanatic. My type of guy.

I'm still wondering if any of you would like to do an SPA Break soon, reply or email, these look fantastic.

Daddy's Day Break - UD2 Retail 2009-10

We came back home Saturday with our little baby girl, a perfect beauty in perfect condition and without any dinged corners, just like daddy loves them.

Anyway, I had to go to Wal-Mart on Sunday morning to buy some supplies for the weeks to come, home with my little girl. A trip to Wal-Mart means some wax, even though in Montreal all you can get is some Hockey from the Junk Wax Era and some retail from this year if you're lucky. And I was lucky today, I was able to grab a Retail Tin of Upper-Deck Series 2 and it wasn't all bad. Let's see what I pulled...

Stras-Mania

During all the crazyness surrounding the expected debut of Stephen Straburgh, I've sold some hobby packs over on ebay. This was a good way to absorb some of the money spent on hobby boxes and build some feedbacks on the Bay.

One of the buyer left me a feedback today and with 3 packs he pulled one Strasburgh Chrome and one Blue USA Refractors for Sebastien Valle. That's cool.

I'm pretty sure one Auto was pulled in the packs I've sold since I only got two myself out of 3+ hobby boxes (I myself opened 36 packs all in all and pulled two autos).

I'm always happy when a collector pulls a hit from my transactions.Altough I would have liked it for myself, I almost like it better this way around because everyone is happy. I get to paid a part of my collection and he pulls the hit of the moment. Everyone wins and the Internet thing goes on for me.

Who knows, maybe in ten years I'll be able to have my very own brick & mortar with a coffee house inside. My two vices togethers, Cards & Coffee.

Cards from my youth Vol 1. Teemu Selanne

Like most of you, I guess, collecting is something that started years and years ago. For me, it all started with the 1989-1990 O-Pee-Chee NHL Set. Those were my first cards and to my recollection, this was the first pack that I ever bust open. To root of all evil...

But I don't want to start this trip to memory lane with this set. Not yet...

Do you remember the Teemu Selanne / Alexander Mogiln rivalry in the early 90's? Both rookie sensations were on fire and scored 76 goals apiece during Selanne's first year with the Jets. Yup, it's not a typo... it's really 76 goals, hockey was incredibly offensive back then.

Anyway, the card up here is my first ever Selanne card, the 91-92 UD Rookie and yes, it is in french. For the youngster that I am, cards in french were a must for my collection and local retailers were only selling those anyway. French in Quebec is a big deal and back then, cards compagnies acknowledged us with the hockey products, especially Score who had two different versions to accomodate the US and Canada.

I know now that this card as little to no value due to the lack of scarcity but back then, it was a week of paper route's money for me. A whole damn week for a piece of cardboard that I still have and still like a lot, even without the lack of value. I must have taken this one in and out of the sleeves at least 100 times, changing the sorting patterns in my book on a weekly basis.

Now it's safe in a toploader, still in french and strongly rooted in my childhood memories. On the verge of being a daddy myself, looking back to my old collection is something that I cherish a lot and hope to pass along down the line.

Hope, but with a little girl, it might be tricky.

My Girlfriend was really clear this week : Make room for the baby girl. Translation, I had to clear some space and in my office, most of the space is eaten up by cards and stuff related to.

Ends my susbcriptions to Check out My Cards to 'clear some space' and who knows, maybe get some funds for more cards to lose more space (my girlfriends dosen't get that part yet, I kinda stopped the story after the 'some funds' part)

Anyway, we'll what happens in 8 weeks when my cards are up there.

Any of you add any good experience with COMC? I think I'm gonna buy more than sell but who knows...

EDIT - 114 Cards is the total of my first batch. I hope something fun happen.

Sewing Box Break...

Cool friday, it was a bit rainy in Montreal but I received my share of the Group Break set by The Sewing Machine Dude. Altough it wasen't my luckiest break it is still cool to receive new cards.

The Harmon Killebrew and Frank Thomas dual jersey was the Highlight of my break featuring the Twins and the Nationals.

But my favorite two cards are the Joe Mauer Starquest from the 2008 UD Series. I pulled one 'Common' and one 'Rare' variation and they look really nice side by side. And you can't really go wrong with the best catcher of his generation.

A 2009 Bowman Chrome 'World' of Kyuji Fujikawa (Who?) is also a sweet looking cards, numbered out of 250.

But anyway, check the guys website. The breaks are always fun.

2009-10 SP Authentic Hockey is Coming.

One of my favorite Hockey set each year is coming soon and Upper-Deck released the Checklist for this year’s SP Authentic and seriously, WOW !

I love everything about it. The low numbered on-card auto of ‘’Immortals’’, the Rookie Patch Review Auto (like Patrick Roy in a Habs jersey) and of course every goodies from this year's rookie class.

The down part of this set is that the base sets and the inserts keep no value whatsoever in the secondary market and even among traders, a few weeks after the product’s release they tend to vanish somewhere in shoeboxes at home. But they look great, seriously, and I usually gather at least one base set to put in a binder for my collection. The hobby is not about value, if you like something you should keep it and store it properly, period.

UD is pulling a great design almost every year and the 2010 one seems right on the money from what I’ve seen.

Quick question here, woule there be interest in a Group Break here ? With Random Teams or Chosen Teams, I don’t know, we could do 4—6 boxes, maybe a full case and it would come to below 50$ per team, which is a great value for the potential hits.

Let me know what you guys think, it would be a great way to jumpstart my blog with my first group break being with a loaded product like this.

I'll buy some for myself, that's a given. Just how much is the real question. Anyway, release is somewhere next week.

Bryce Harper and then what... ?

It's official, the phenom Bryce Harper is now a Washington Nationals. After all the buzz before the 2010 MLB draft, it's now time to show up and perform for the young kid whose expectations are as high as ever.

It's my second draft in a row that I am bummed out by the results. Since the moving from Montreal to Washington, the wounds have healed but they're still sore. I remember Les Expos and sometimes, way too often, I wonder what could have been after all those years.

The Nationals didn't make much noise with their performances on the field, thus the reward of two consecutives first overall picks. But sill, lousy baseball is better than no baseball at all.

I remember the 90's of my youth with Les Expos filling my summertime vacations with all the thrills and excitements that brings an MLB season. Most of the time we were eating the dust of rivals such as the Atlanta Braves but nevertheless, they're was always a reason to go to the Stade Olympique for some baseball.

When I was a kid, it was all about Dennis Martinez. The early 90's were El Presidente's playground and Montreal had eyes for him only. Then came the good days before the lock-out with the likes of Larry Walker, Delino Deshields, Marquis Grissom and many others until the birth of young Pedro Martinez. We witnessed the genesis of the monster superstar that was awaiting a chance to shine. Martinez made the highlights every other day in Montreal and the town was inspired by the kid's growth. Baseball was frantic and at his peak, it was a thing of beauty.

I was young so the timeline is kind of blurry but still, I do remember seeing Pedro live at the Stade and it's as good a memory as it gets.

Then came Vladimir Guerrero. If you think the Angels loved Vlad, think again. The Montrealers adored their best player in more than 15 years and it was the town's talk about since hockey was kind of down in Montreal in the mid-90's after the infamous Patrick Roy trade with the Colorado Avalanche.

As a young high-schooler I played ball with the likes of Vladimir Guerrero in my television set every damn day. The pulse of my hobby was the same as Vlad and for the time being, there were no greater things in Montreal than Vladimir Guerrero and Pedro Martinez.

What's Bryce Harper got to do with that? With him and Strasburgh, it could have been the same frenzy in Montreal all over again. It could have been our championship season that never was because of the player's association strike. It could have been the appex of 40 plus years of baseball in this weird town that speaks french way too much for everybody else in America. It could have been but yet, it is not.

I've watched Strasburgh first game tonight and I do believe the hype. Him and Harper will bring life to a fanbase that since now didn't really cared about baseball, much like Montreal before Gary Carter in the 80's.

If you're in the DC area, you are lucky. You are about to experience something quite unique and unlike me, you will be able to bring your children to witness the parade. Don't miss it out, live it to the fullest.

Bowman 2010 Hobby Break, 30+ Packs

I had some time to play with the scanner and here are the highlights of these breaks. According to the number of Gold Refractor I have, I've opened 35 hobby packs. I guess I did pretty good on some pulls. Let's take a look.

USA18-BC8 Bryce Harper Chrome USA Rookie

Need I explain this one? The so-called Chosen One in it's Chrome awesomeness...

USA18-BC19 Karsten Whitson

I've pulled Whitson 3 times out of 35 packs and since he was drafted 9th Overall by the Marlins, I'm pretty happy about it. One is the refractor numbered 430/777 so I can't complain about the dupes, can I?

USA18-BC17 Jameson Taillon

The Pirates' pick and probably the best pitching prospect out of 2010. Pretty cool.

USA18-BC10 Manny Machado

The best infielder of this draft and maybe the face of the future for the brown birds.

BCP116 Kirk Nieuwenhuis 258/500

Auto goodness. I usually like these better than the other hits but the USA Class was pretty neat in my packs. Still, a Mets prospect with a sweet chrome auto, can't complain.

And of course I'm gathering a lot of gold refractors and insert variation. If you collect these, let me know I'll make a list of something. I'm still wondering if I am putting together the 90's variation set or not.

I think I'm gonna have to buy some more of these Bowman, it's seriously way too fun to bust. But it's a lot of base cards to store afterward, well, each story as a downfall.

Wow,

This product is so much fun to bust open.

I've been seeling packs for a week now and I was home saturday night, a bit tired, with a bunch of unopened packs on my laps. Guess what happened?

I busted one, and then another, and then another and next thing you know, I've been through 30+ packs in half an hour.

Like I said, too much fun.

I'll scan everything noteworthy sometime this week but my main hit, Bryce Harper Chrome RC, will the Bay anytime soon.

And is it me or the Bowman Retros look way nice. Like 'childhood' nice. I'm gonna collect these and maybe build a set, long term project. Gotta have to write that down.

Anyway, if you didn't bust any yet. Just go ahead and treat yourself. Totally worth it.
